Modern jazz dance provides a platform for pupils to practice an up-to-date, contemporary form of dance, while becoming immersed in lively rhythms and movements. At Roydon Academy of Performing Arts, in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, we specialise in teaching pupils to master the art of modern and commercial jazz dance, while adhering to a widely recognised, accredited syllabus.
Fun-filled, lively, and bursting with energy, our theatre craft and modern jazz dance classes offer the opportunity for girls and boys to learn a current, contemporary style of dance. During modern jazz dance, the pupils learn core skills, which will be built on throughout the grades. Our lessons are based around a structured syllabus, which involves learning set exercises, as well as free dances. This provides the opportunity to take International Dance Teachers’ Association exams.
A widely recognised, highly choreographed art form, commercial jazz dance features a mixture of sharp and fluid movements. It also includes popping and locking, and animated expression similar to dances seen on commercial video clips. This stylised fusion of street funk, hip hop, and pop is similar to styles seen in music videos starring:
Beyoncé – Lady Gaga – Michael Jackson – Britney Spears – Janet Jackson
An expressive dance form with a free, artistic, expressive feel, contemporary draws on techniques from classical ballet. However, unlike ballet, contemporary focuses on floor work and dancers will usually perform in bare feet. Contemporary dance involves the use of expression and emotion to portray images, lyrics, and feelings. Its principles include:
Centring – Alignment – Gravity – Contraction – Release – Suspension
